The Louis Latour Pernand Vergelesses AOC is a beautiful Pinot Noir from the Cote d’Or.
The grapes for this wine are grown on vines located on the slopes of a relatively small hillside, in the Cote d’Or region of the Cote du Beaune. The village of Pernand-Vergelesses is located just 3km from Aloxe-Corton, and of all the villages that the Grand Cru hill of Corton looks over, this is the most picturesque.
The pinot noir grapes are handpicked, then pressed and aged up to 10 months in French oak barrels which gives these wines their unique taste.
The barrels are made inhouse by Louis Latour’s cooperage, from oak trees that are over 150 years. The wood is then aged outdoors for 2 years before being crafted into barrels. I have watched barrels being made and the method where they are toasted. This involves building a fire inside the partially structured barrel and toasting according to the wine master’s specifications for each wine, from a delicate toasting to more robust flavours.
Note availability of the 2019 vintage is limited
