Bonjour French Market Friends,
Happy Thanksgiving to all my special clients from America, many of you have visited our store this week to buy ingredients for your Thanksgiving dinner tonight. This week in LA, my Nicky’s team cooked up 80 full roast turkey dinners and trimmings, for delivery to clients’ residences this evening, in between serving regulars at Gjusta. In addition to all the prep for Thanksgiving, they had their busiest weekend of the year and welcomed one of the most famous of California’s chefs, Alice Waters from Chez Panisse. Alice is one of the original drivers of the Farm-to-Table food movement and an inspiration to many younger chefs, including Nicky. Nicky said it was incredible to meet the person whose concept and cookery books Nicky has carried around the world with her for years.

Back here in Cape Town, on Friday, we served the 130 guests of the French SA Chamber of Commerce with a country style buffet, at the Alliance Francaise du Cap, as we celebrated the Festival of the Nouveau Beaujolais. We started with mini quiches, followed by a buffet of French cheese, charcuterie and fresh baguettes, followed by macarons. Please do ask if you are looking for a French buffet service as we can assist, plus supply French wines or champagne for your entertainment during this season, we will be delighted to help you. I can organise some of my team members to assist with lay out and service if required. Note this is on a pre-order basis.

On 1st of December our city will be switching on the Christmas decorations and lighting up the centre of Town. This is a great opportunity to take the children along to enjoy this event that preludes all the fun of  the Festive Season. Our Cape Town Cruise Terminal has been honoured as Africa’s Best Cruise Terminal for the 4th time, at the prestigious World Cruise Awards. Our Port is expecting the busiest season ever, with 88 cruise vessels due to visit, carrying over 130,000 passengers. This is a huge boost to our local economy and employment. It trickles down to small businesses like mine where we are able to supply kilos of French cheese to the Cruise liners, thereby enabling me to employ more staff.

We have lots of French cheese in stock including the favourites such as Brie with Truffle cream, Vacherousse, Brie de Meaux, Morbier, Comte and Reblochon to name just a few.

For Festive Season presents, do remember that we have the delicious Baci Italian chocolate Advent calendarsthese make a wonderful and long-lasting gift (if you have strong will power) as there is a chocolate for each day until the 24th.  We also have a million Panettones, from little 100gramme stocking fillers to 1kg family sized cakes.

Another treat for Christmas is Caviar, we have stock from Italy and Madagascar. We also have stock of the Loch Fyne farmed Scottish salmon.

We have a new product at the shop which is platters of finger snacks, ready sliced Italian cheese and meat, laid out on trays and ready to serve. These are great for serving at picnics or snacks.

For my recipe this week I am going to share a Thanksgiving dish that a dear American client kindly shared with me, instead of the traditional turkey, this recipe is a chicken served with a cream and Calvados sauce, based on a recipe from Normandie, see below. We do have stock of Calvados in our shop.

I wish you a peaceful and relaxing weekend as you start planning your Christmas treats.
Regards

Suzanne and The French Market Team
