Bonjour French Market Friends,
This week in Paris, a daring jewellery theft at the Louvre Museum shocked the world. Priceless crown jewels belonging to Napoleon, and other members of his family, were stolen in broad daylight by thieves, pretending to be workmen. Included in the heist was Empress Marie-Louise’s beautiful emerald and diamond necklace and earrings. Marie-Louise was the second wife of Napoleon I, and the great-niece of Queen Marie Antoinette. So far, no sign of the irreplaceable jewels has been found, and it is feared that they will have been broken down and lost to the world forever. Also in the spotlight was the incarceration of past president Sarkozy for corruption relating to an election campaign. In France no-one is above the law.

Back here in our beautiful windy city, sadly the Marathon last Sunday was cancelled due to violent winds. This weekend several roads are closed off at the top of the city for a Classic Car race so check out the road closures if you are moving around town.

We have lots of beautiful regional French cheese in stock for you to try. From Normandie CamembertBurgundy triple cream Delice, Jura Vacherousse, handcrafted Brie from the Vosges, Goat’s cheese buche, little fresh crottins and flavourful and dry crottins from the Loire. We have the beautiful raw milk mountain cheeses, Emmental, Comte, Morbier and Raclette from the Jura, Cantal and Bleu from the Auvergne, Roquefort from the South. Plus, real French butter from Normandie. We have this in 250gr rolls and the unsalted butter also comes in 1kg packs if you wish to make pastries.

In our meat range we have the deliciously smooth duck liver mousse from the Landes region, plus several different jars of terrines and pates made in the traditional French way.

We have just unpacked a range of Bourbon Vanilla products from Madagascar. We have vanilla pods, vanilla paste, vanilla extract and vanilla seeds. These have a beautiful aroma and enhance the flavour of your desserts and cakes.
We have a new stock of Dutch mayonnaise in tubes, this is practical especially when you go on a picnic. Also from Holland we have packs of rye bread, crisp Roka cheese biscuits, Stroopwafels, Cassis flavoured, sparkling cool drink and vols aux vents. These are great for making easy canapes.

In our fresh produce range, we still have some globe artichokes although the season is coming to an end. We have a couple of rare pink garlic bulbs left. This garlic known as Egyptian garlic has a more intense flavour than the white garlic cloves. Our fresh eggs are still one of our most popular products. Once people try them, they find the flavour is so much better than the mass-produced eggs, the yolk colour is more golden, and the shells are delicate. We also have a stock of duck’s eggs and quails’ eggs.

For my recipe this week I thought I would use seasonal fresh raspberries which are easy to find now as the weather warms up. This is an easy crumble with raspberries instead of apple. It only takes a few minutes to prepare and tastes delicious. Serve it with a slice of Triple Cream delice and a glass of Dry Prosecco available at our store.

I wish you a warm and sunny weekend – get out in the garden or down to the beach and have a picnic full of French treats.
Regards

Suzanne and The French Market Team
