Bonjour French Market Friends,
Following on from last week’s daring raid on the Louvre Museum and the theft of Napoleon’s crown jewels, the French police have left no stone unturned to try and recover the jewels. Earlier this week they arrested 2 men who they managed to identify from DNA on the abandoned gloves and other items discarded during the burglary. They have just announced the arrest of a further 5 men last night, however, to date they have still not been able to recover the jewels worth 88 million Euros. The search will continue relentlessly. The German company Boecker that manufactured the mobile furniture lift, which was used by the thieves, managed get some excellent marketing as a result, by using the slogan “When you need to move fast.” Resulting in 4,3 million views.

The year has raced away, and we will be starting November in 2 days’ time. We have just unpacked our Panettone range (which we order in June), and the shop is filled to the ceiling with these beautiful Italian Christmas cakes. We have traditional panettone with fruit filling, we have Pandoro with their angels’ wings, we have beautifully gift-wrapped Pear and chocolate panettone. We have from baby sized panettone up to the 1kg cakes. There is a size to fit each person’s wishes. Pop in and see what we have in stock, Christmas is just around the corner.

If you are planning to entertain over the season, do let me know if you wish to put in an early order for a cheese platter. We will happily advise you on a selection to suit your tastes and make suggestions for wines to pair with the cheeses. We have received a new shipment of French cheese and have plenty to offer you, there is a cheese to suit everyone’s taste.

For the summer season we are already receiving speciality food enquiries from international visitors, who are enjoying our beautiful city. We have several requests for caviar; we keep a small stock of Baerii sturgeon caviar and Asetra (Oscietra) in the shop. We can bring in Beluga caviar with a 24-hour notice period during the week. In addition, many clients are looking for Keta (the large pink salmon roe). For décor, our black lumpfish roe from Iceland, is most attractive over the top of an egg mayonnaise or potato salad.

In our cool drinks range we have received stock of a very English fruit cordial – Ribena, a blackcurrant cordial. It is most refreshing when mixed with ice and cold water. This might have been inspired by Creme de cassis, the liqueur made from blackcurrants in Burgundy, which we also stock.

In our fresh produce range, we still have some white asparagus. The season does not last long so do try some before the season finishes. We have some speciality garlic bulbs as well.

For my recipe this week I decided to share a quick and easy recipe for grilled Buche de Chevre, goat’s cheese and baby tomato toasts. This can be served as an aperitif or as a light main course. I suggest pairing this with a glass of Cheval Noir Sauvignon Blanc, a regional wine produced by Mahler Besse in Bordeaux. Available from our shop or you can order with us online.

I hope you have a relaxing and warm weekend and enjoy the summer weather.
Regards

Suzanne and The French Market Team
