Bonjour French Market Friends,

This weekend in France musicians are digging out their instruments, in preparation for the Fete de la Musique on the 21st June, the Summer Solstice. This is the longest day in the Northern hemisphere. Traditionally musicians perform for free, throughout the country, on the streets, in bars, wherever there is space. There are large concerts happening around the country and in the gardens of the Louvre Palace in the heart of Paris. All major art museums and cultural centres are also open to the public for free. At our Alliance Francaise on Loop Street, the Festival of Music is starting tomorrow evening, Friday, at 6.30, Entry is free and there will be plenty of entertainment. You can register online to attend for free on Quicket events 317759.

For South Africa, the big sports news this week was the winning of the World Test Cricket Championship at Lords by our national Team the Proteas against the Aussies. The Team was warmly welcomed by crowds of fans at ORTIA on their return from London with the Mace.(Image courtesy Facebook)

In our cheese stock this week we have received the large Camemberts from Normandie and raw milk Brie de Meaux. The Reblochon replacement, the Préféré de nos Montagnes is a similar shape and size to Reblochon, with a slightly gentler flavour We have a new stock of raw milk Swiss Gruyere. We have cheddars from Wales and Ireland and Stilton from England. There are plenty of different types of cheese for you to enjoy.

In our dry goods range we have lots of new French biscuits for you to try. Langues de Chat are thin delicate crisp biscuits with a roughish surface, reminiscent of a cat’s tongue. We have the “Russian cigarettesthese are very thin rolled, crisp biscuits, which have a shape similar to a Russian cigarette, We have some mini Emmental and Comte Galettes, and Comte butter biscuits, these are great for cocktail nibbles. We have the little Lu biscuits topped with chocolate and hazelnut. We also have a new range of dried Tarragon and dried Morelles from France. There are lots of new products so do come and explore.

We continue to offer the amazing range of French patisserie from our French Master Patissier Chef Cedric. These are especially welcoming in this cold weather and make a wonderful gift. In addition we have freshly baked madeleines and canneles.

In our alcohol range we have topped up with Cassis from Burgundy, a Gamay from Brouilly in Beaujolais, the Cotes de Rose from Provence, Cremant, Gewurtztraminer and Riesling from Gustave Laurents in Alsace, Sancerre from the Loire and plenty more.

For our recipe this week, I have selected a simple apple flan with a Calvados glaze. I included the recipe for the pastry base but if you are in a hurry, you can use readymade pastry instead.

The Winter truffle season has just started in South Africa, and we hope to have some truffles in next week, please let me know if you wish to order some.

I hope you enjoy your cold, wet winter weekend, wrapped up in front of a log fire eating some toasted cheese, it will warm you up.
Regards

Suzanne and The French Market Team
