Bonjour French Market Friends,
The Roland Garros Tennis tournament in Paris ended last Sunday with an epic 5 and half hour-long, nail-biting match between the new generation of leading tennis players, Sinner and Alcaraz, watched by millions of viewers around the globe. This was following the win on Saturday by Coco Gauff, the youngest American woman to win the Women’s Final since Serena Williams. The crowds at the stadium and online, loved the matches and the great organisation of the Roland Garros Tournament. Carlos has also stunned the world by donating a large part of his winnings to the homeless and less fortunate people. (Image courtesy Facebook)
Back here in our lovely city of Cape Town our new stock of cheese has landed from Paris and hopefully will be cleared into the shop tomorrow during the morning. We will have new stock of the triple cream Delice, Brie with truffle cream layer, Pont l’Eveque, Livarot, lots of Epoisses, Camemberts and many more delicious treats. One new cheese that arrives tomorrow is the Préféré de nos Montagnes a cheese made in the Jura, similar to Reblochon. We also have a new stock of the black label Extra Appenzeller; this has been aged for at least 10 months and has a beautiful deep flavour. We have a new Comte aged 8 months, this one has a fruity taste and gentler flavour that its older brother, the 18-month aged Comte, which is distinctive, with its crystallisation and depth of flavour. Come in and taste something new.
In our alcohol range we have received a new stock of Crème de Cassis, the blackcurrant liqueur that is popularly known when it is mixed with Champagne to create a Kir Royale. In Burgundy, where this liqueur originates, it was originally mixed with a still white wine, to improve the flavour of a simple Vin de Table (table wine), this version is known as a Kir.
This Sunday is Father’s Day and around South Africa families are preparing treats for their special Dads. We have lots of ideas for Dad’s gifts in our shop. Ranging from easy to bake-at-home croissants that you serve your father for breakfast, accompanied by French salt-crystal butter and Bonne Maman jam. For lunch you can serve your Dad a delicious platter of French cheese and terrines accompanied by a freshly baked baguette. For pre dinner cocktails you can make him a Kir Royale with some Louis Roederer Champagne and a teaspoon of Gabriel Boudier Cassis served with blinis from Paris, topped with cream cheese and Cru Caviar. For dinner you can serve him some Confit de Canard and potatoes roasted in duck fat paired with some of his favourite French wine. This should make him the happiest Dad in the world. You can find these ingredients at the French Market shop.
For our recipe this week I decided to find a different way to use Crème de Cassis apart from adding to Champagne. I found a recipe for duck breasts and a cassis sauce, its simple and tasty.
I hope you have a wonderful Father’s Day celebration and get thoroughly spoiled.
Regards
Suzanne and The French Market Team
