Bonjour French Market Friends,

In France, the Tour de France cycle race set off on the weekend and has gone through the beautiful Cantal region in the centre of France en route to the Pyrenees (Image courtesy of FB Ville de Lourdes). The heatwave is continuing in France, and the temperatures have been up in the mid 30s, which is gruelling for the riders. The Tour organisers monitor the situation carefully and allow deviations from strict rules if needed, such as a long uphill climb in the blazing sun. Tonight the French nation will be glued to their screens to watch their team, hopefully, beat Morocco and win a place in the World Cup semi-finals. Wimbledon is into the final weekend and a French born player Arthur Fery, now playing for England, is through to the semifinals.

Last weekend’s first monthly market at the Glen Padel club above Clifton was fun, assisted by my French intern student Emilies, we sold plenty of Mimosa cocktails made with fresh orange juice and Tribaut Schloesser Brut Champagne to the Padel tournament players.

Back here in our winter-cool city, the days are just starting to get longer. Celebrations are planned for Tuesday’s French National Day on the 14th of July. We have flown in kilos of French cheese and sent it around S Africa and to Namibia for the celebrations. If you want to create your own French celebrations with your friends, sharing a platter of French cheese and wine or champagne, do contact me and we will organise this for you.

This week we have lots of delicious French cheese to offer you, from rich and buttery Bries, tangy Camemberts, deep flavoured Mimolette, pungent Epoisses, Walnut cream slices and walnut liqueur flavoured mountain wheels, 30-month aged Comte, 24-month aged Parmigiano and so much more.

In our fresh produce range, we have some super jumbo eggs back in stock. Supply has been a bit erratic; I don’t think the chickens like the cold weather. We have the beautiful, fresh black winter truffle grown here in SA; the aroma is really special. The sizes are quite small ranging from about 15 to 25 grammes. Price is R35 per gramme.

In our seafood range we have stock of caviar from Madagascar, Keta (wild salmon roe) from the North Pacific and white and brown anchovies.

I realised that I made an error in my Comte Mille Feuille recipe 2 weeks ago. I mistyped the butter quantity as 500gr instead of 50gr (I noted this when I made some for my friends so please correct your recipe copy). I also switched the soy sauce and sherry vinegar with some Balsamic glaze and added some raisins into the onion confit. It tasted very good.

My recipe this week is little handmade, butter biscuits which I thought would be fun for children to make something for their dad. I called them “Little Thumbies“ because all the children have to do after you have made the dough, is to roll it in little balls, then flatten it with a thumb print which you fill with a bit of jam. They taste good too and can be eaten with a cup of coffee, or a glass of Louis Roederer Rose champagne.

Good luck to France tonight and I hope you have a great 14thof July celebration.

Regards

Suzanne and The French Market Team
