Bonjour French Market Friends,
This weekend in the heart of Paris, the roads were closed to allow for the famous “Les 10kms des Etoiles (the Stars) race” run by members of the Restaurant, Hotelier and Tourism industry. Over 6000 participants took place in the race which started at the Place du Palais Royal, led along the Seine, past the Louvre and many other famous buildings up to the Trocadero. Being Paris the participants were given a leisurely coffee and snack before they started and were accompanied by bands of musicians along the route. Despite the Spring rain, all the participants looked as if they were really enjoying the race. The winner took about 30 minutes, and the last runner came in about 2 and half hours later. The race supports various charities and is a great opportunity to enjoy the heart of Paris without traffic. (Images courtesy Charlotte Segland and Herve Thouroude pour mementos)

Back here in Cape Town next weekend is the 2 Oceans Marathon, a slightly more strenuous race. If you are participating, I suggest you stock up on high energy Crème de Marron from our shop.

In our shop this week we have lots of delicious French food for you to enjoy while you gear up for next week’s marathon. We have a beautiful, melting, Brie from Meaux. The crust is white, and the centre is oozing out, quite delicious. There are lots of Camemberts which you can melt in the oven with slivers of garlic and sprigs of rosemary. As the weather has suddenly turned cooler you can plan a Raclette dinner with slices of raclette that you melt and pour over boiled potatoes. Or you can take slices of Brie and wrap it in phyllo pastry them bake that in the oven. We have new stock of sheep’s milk Manchego from Spain and Gorgonzola from Italy.

In our goat’s cheese range, we have new stock of Buche de chèvrea white log shaped cheese that has a white crust and crumbly white centre. We also have fresh goat’s cheese crottins, these are textured like velvet with a delicate flavour. We also have some of the ash dusted St Maure cheese from the Loire valley, and a firm textured mild flavoured goat’s cheese from Holland.

Arriving Friday (tomorrow) we will have new stock of freshly baked cheese straws, palmiers (pigs’ ears) biscuits, almond meringues, lemon flavoured madeleines, pork grattons (scratchings), fresh mayonnaise, Aioli, fresh farm eggs and trays of beautiful purple figs.

My recipe today is a quick and tasty goat’s cheese snack made from toasted chunks of Buche de Chevre goat’s cheese topped with fresh baby tomatoes. Goat’s cheese pairs well with a glass of sauvignon blanc, particularly Sancerre, which is grown in the Loire valley, where goat’s cheese production is predominant. We have a beautiful La Doucette Comte Lafond Sancerre made with sauvignon blanc grapes.
I hope you have an enjoyable and cooler weekend with some refreshing rain. We look forward to welcoming you in our shop soon.

Regards
Suzanne and The French Market Team
